BOBBY SANDS recorded his thoughts and feelings in his diary for the first 17 days of his 66-day hunger strike in the infamous H-Blocks of Long Kesh Prison in 1981. The hunger strike was part of a momentous struggle for the restoration of political status to Irish republican prisoners.

Bobby died on May 5th 1981. The previous month, he had been elected as the Member of Parliament for Fermanagh/South Tyrone.

The hunger strike by Bobby and his nine comrades who died with him in 1981 – Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, Patsy O'Hara, Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Dohery, Thomas McElwee, and Michael Devine – was a new, heroic, selfless chapter in Ireland’s struggle for freedom. Bobby Sands is remembered all over the world as an iconic symbol of freedom.
