Product Description

Rare Archival Photo

Tom Barry was the Commander of the Third West Cork Flying Column and one of the greatest architects of modern guerrilla warfare in Ireland's fight for Freedom. This photograph was taken at a IRA training camp in 1920. The name "flying column" was given to mobile armed units of the Irish Republican Army during the Irish War of Independence 1919-1921. A fictionalised cork flying column is the subject of Ken Loach’s award winning film The Wind That Shakes The Barley.
