A Farther Shore : Ireland's Long Road to Peace

A personal memoir and a unique inside story, revealing the truth behind the headlines of the peace process.

Autographed by Gerry Adams

It covers the tumultuous years from the late 1970s up to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

An author as well as an activist, Gerry Adams brings a vivid sense of immediacy and a writer's understanding of narrative to this story of the triumph of hope in what was long considered an intractable bloody conflict. He conveys the tensions of the peace process, the sense of teetering on the brink, and he has a sharp eye and acute ear for the more humorous foibles of political allies and enemies alike.

  • He reveals previously unpublished details of the peace process:
  • About the key players;
  • The truth about the secret contacts with the Catholic Church;
  • He speaks candidly about being shot;
  • He gives the inside story on the covert talks between republicans and the British government;
  • The Irish-American role and meetings in the White House;
  • The South African role;
  • He discloses details of his discussions with the IRA leadership;
  • The differences within republicanism and the emergence of 'dissidents';
  • The breakdown of the first IRA cessation
  • And he details for the first time the secret talks involving the Irish, British and US governments, the IRA leadership and the then British opposition leader Tony Blair, to reinstate the IRA cessation;
  • And then the Good Friday Agreement; what was agreed and what was promised.
  • He paints revealing portraits of the other leading characters in the drama that was acted out through ceasefires and stand-offs, discussions and confrontations. Amongst these are Tony Blair, Bertie Ahem, Mo Mowlam, Martin McGuinness, Albert Reynolds, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Jean Kennedy Smith, David Trimble, John Hume, Nelson Mandela and John Bruton and Charlie Haughey.
  • As one of the pre-eminent republican strategists of his generation he provides a first hand and authentic account of the principles and tactics underpinning modern Irish republicanism.

And in a world where peace processes are needed more urgently than ever before Hope and History provides a template for conflict resolution processes internationally.

Alex Maskey: Man and Mayor, Barry McCaffrey
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites
Foreword by Ken Livingston, Mayor of London.

Charts the remarkable development of Alex Maskey's career from his days as a young idealist regularly arrested for his part in the confrontational street politics in the early days of the Troubles, through internment and escape attempts from Long kesh, to the lonely and intimidating "bear garden" of Belfast City Council chamber where he was the sole Sinn Féin representative.

On the road to becoming Belfast's first republican Mayor, Maskey suffered more attempts on his life than any other Irish politician and still carries lead fragments in his body from a close range shotgun blast.

Investigative journalist Barry McCaffrey reveals the intriguing story of Maskey's secret peace talks with loyalist killers, the extraordinary lengths is to which the Sinn Féin Mayor went to reach out to political opponents, and his high risk break with republican tradition in honouring British war dead.

Ireland's Patriot Dead

This book is in memory of the 364 Republicans whose names are on the Roll of Honour. These men and women. Volunteers in Óglaigh Na h-Éireann, Cumman Na mBan, Fianna Éireann, and members of Sinn Féin gave their lives in the cause of Irish Freedom.

They did not seek favour or glory, and irrespective of personal sacrifice, pledged their lives in service of the Republic.

This book is dedicated to their memory, and to their families, who have borne loss with dignity and pride.

These pages are a small testimony of the high esteem in which Republicans at home and abroad hold our fallen comrades and their families.

“….In 1969 a new generation of Republicans took up the same cause and as these pages testify, paid a terrible price. Each and every one of them was a cherished family member and friend, and we must remember that each death broke another hundred hearts. We must not, we will not, forget them or their families.

This book tells their story but it is neither the whole story or indeed the end. This struggle must continue until we realise the dreams and aspirations of our fallen comrades.” Joe Cahill.

The unique story of a lifelong and top-ranking member of the IRA

Autographed by Joe Cahill

Born in Belfast in 1920, Joe Cahill has been an IRA man all his life. “I was born in a united Ireland,” he says. “ I want to die in a united Ireland.” This ambition has motivated his entire life.

It has been a life of imprisonment, of hunger strikes, of being on the run, in safe houses, in action, and latterly in talks and negotiations. IRA activists rarely, if ever speak about their lives or their organisation, but here Cahill gives his full and frank story, his experiences – from prison cells of the 1940’s when the birch and cat-o’nine-tails were still in use, to the corridors of power in Washington DC when the good Friday Agreement was being negotiated.

This is the story of an extraordinary journey, Cahill’s own life mirroring the growth, changes and development of the republican movement as a whole through more than sixty years of intense involvement.
